Manafu (GAMERA)

Gamera (ガメラ,   Gamera?) is a giant turtle kaiju that appeared in the 2015 Gamera short film, GAMERA.

Name[]

Gamera's name comes from the Japanese word kame (カメ?), meaning "turtle," and -ra (ラ?), a common suffix in kaiju names. The "k-" sound at the beginning of Gamera's name may have been changed to a "g-" sound to avoid making the monster's name sound like the word "camera," which is spelled カメラ in Japanese.

Design[]

The Gamera in GAMERA incorporates elements of the design of the Heisei Gameras into his appearance, in addition to the enduring design elements of past incarnations. This Gamera features the much more reptilian head of the Gameras from Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris and Gamera the Brave. Much like his design from the third heisei Gamera film his carapace consists of multiple independently-moving plates, and more uniquely, his shell is fully articulated, allowing him to flex and bend his torso. Most noticeable about Gamera's head are the two elongated tusks which protrude from his lower jaw resembling Gamera from Gamera 2: Attack of Legion. The 2023 Gamera has elements that closely resemble those of the 2015 model.

History[]

Notes[]

  1. A rough sketch of a T-shirt exclusive to the New York Comic Con has the used notation "God of the Earth" and a possible explanation like a moving rocky mountain.
  2. Kadokawa's initial request was over 100m, but it was instantly changed because Ishii instantly felt it was extremely too enormous to stand comfortably in an alley in Tokyo.
