Gamera References by Pokemon

Examples of references to the Gamera franchise by the Pokémon.[note 1]

There have been multiple cases for the Pokémon franchise to insert presumable references to various classic tokusatsu productions, including the Gamera.[1][2]

Capsule Monster[]

Main article: Gamera (Capsule Monster)
Main article: Konaka Gamera
Karabajio

Karabajio, the early concept of Blastoise with some influences from Gamera.[3]

Gamera was also a "Capsule Monster" in Cosplay Knight Cutie Knight. Capsule Monster from the Ultraman franchise is one of the main inspiration sources for the Pokémon franchise.[4] Noriaki Yuasa directed Gamera in Cosplay Warrior Cutie Knight where Hurricane Ryu, the author of Giant Monster Gamera, played Gamera.[5]

"Konaka Gamera" also influenced Ultraman Tiga and Digimon Tamers where the Digimon franchise was influenced by Pokémon.

Cases[]

You may find some of these to be a stretch, however these were based on indications by Japanese audiences among various online platforms and SNS.

Designs[]

  • Blastoise bears a resemblance to Gamera including Karabajio, the early design of Blastoise.[3]
  • Torkoal is a fire-breathing turtle akin to Gamera.[2]
  • Carracosta's design to possess tusk-esque protrusions and the signature move Aqua Jet somewhat resemble descriptions of Gamera.[6]
  • Descriptions of Volcanion in Pokémon the Movie: Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel bear some resemblances to Gamera.[7]
  • Gigantamax Drednaw is a possible reference to Gamera; bipedalism and elongated tusks on lower jaw. The ancient lore also tells a tale of a Gigantamax Drednaw preventing a natural disaster.[8]
  • Enamorus' theme and characteristics to represent the "Black Tortoise" of the Four Symbols, flying capability, and being protector of life are somewhat reminiscent of Gamera.[9]

Actions[]

Ash's Squirtle's Hydro Pump.

  • In the Pokémon anime, Ash's Squirtle, the pre-evolved form of Blastoise, performs the move Hydro Pump in much the same way that Gamera flies.[10]
    • This depiction of Hydro Pump was later reused for Blastoise in Pokémon UNITE[3] and Pokkén Tournament DX.
  • Blastoise's moving motions in New Pokémon Snap[11] and Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet[12] are also presumable references to Gamera.[13]
  • Cloned-Blastoise performed a spinning attack akin to Gamera Pokémon: The First Movie in 1998 before the introduction of the move "Rapid Spin" in Generation II in 1999.[14]
  • In the anime, Kiawe's Turtonator performed Gamera-esque spinning actions on several occasions; Dragon Tail against Brock's Steelix in the episode When Regions Collide!, and the jumping performance in the episode Getting a Jump on the Competition!.
  • Terapagos also flies in the anime.

ガメラとムゲンダイナの鳴き声 比較 - Gamera and Mugen Dyna's roar

Roars of Eternatus in the anime.[15]

  • Roars of Eternatus in the anime are partially based on Showa Gamera and Ebirah.[15]
  • Palkia's roars in early trailers of the movie Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai shares the original effect with Toto in Gamera the Brave which was based on Peter Cullen's acting of King Kong for the 1976 film King Kong.
  • Koraidon and Miraidon's calls Gyaosu (ギャオス,   Gyaosu?) is exactly same as the name of the kaiju Gyaos (ギャオス,   Gyaosu?) where the Showa Gyaos in the 1967 film Gamera vs. Gyaos was named by a boy based on how the monster cries.[16]

Trivia[]

  • The 2004 film Godzilla Final Wars may also have a direct reference (insult) towards Gamera and Pokémon (Squirtle).[17] Shogo Tomiyama from Toho indeed perceived Pokemon as the biggest rival of Godzilla at that time.[18]
  • Satoshi Tajiri, the creator of Pokémon, allegedly named his own Wartortle as "Gamera".
  • Shinji Higuchi and Chris Patton have participated in both Gamera and Pokémon franchises.[19][20]
  • A 3D printed model "Ironshell" based on Gamera and Blastoise was released in 2023.[21]
